In this article, we are taking a look at the teams that have won the ICC T20 World Cup so far. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup (formerly ICC World Twenty20) began in 2007 and has taken place regularly since then. Over the years, several teams have managed to go all the way in the competition. And here, we are taking a look at all those teams in detail.
ICC T20 World Cup winners list:
- T20 World Cup 2007 Winner- India
The first edition of the T20 World Cup was held in South Africa in 2007 with 12 teams featuring in the competition. The teams were divided into four groups. Each team played against the other two teams of the group once before the top two teams progressed to the Super 8.
In the Super 8, the teams were once again divided into two groups. The top two teams from each group then advanced to the semifinals. From the first group, India and New Zealand made it to the last four while from the second group, Pakistan and Australia progressed.
India and Pakistan won their semifinal game against Australia and New Zealand respectively. In the final, India beat their arch-rivals by 5 runs in a thrilling clash to become the first team to win the T20 World Cup.
- T20 World Cup 2009 Winner- Pakistan
England hosted the second edition of the T20 World Cup in 2009. The number of teams participating in the competition remained the same – 12. Once again, the 12 teams were divided into four groups of three teams each. Of the 12 teams, eight progressed to the Super 8s after finishing in the top two of their respective groups.
In the Super 8s, South Africa, West Indies, England and India were drawn in one group while Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Ireland were in the other group. South Africa, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Pakistan qualified for the semifinals. In the final, Pakistan beat Sri Lanka to win their maiden T20 World Cup.
- T20 World Cup 2010 Winner- England
The third edition of the T20 World Cup was held in the West Indies. The number of teams participating in the competition remained the same – 12. As a result, the format did not change either and the 12 teams were divided into four groups of three teams each.
Of the 12 teams, eight progressed to the Super 8s after finishing in the top two of their respective groups. From the Super 8s, England, Pakistan, Australia and Sri Lanka qualified for the semifinals. In the end, Australia and England faced each other in the final and the former went on to win the trophy under the captaincy of Paul Collingwood.

- T20 World Cup 2012 Winner- West Indies
In 2012, Sri Lanka hosted the T20 World Cup. The number of teams and the format remained the same, that is group stage followed by Super 8s before the knockouts. In the Super 8s, Sri Lanka, West Indies, New Zealand, England, Australia, Pakistan, India and South Africa fought it out before Sri Lanka, Pakistan, West Indies and Australia made it to the semifinals.
In the final, West Indies beat Sri Lanka to win their first T20 World Cup trophy.
- T20 World Cup 2014 Winner- Sri Lanka
Bangladesh hosted the 2014 edition of the T20 World Cup and a record 16 teams had participated in that edition. The first round of the tournament saw eight teams fighting for the two spots in the Super 10. The top eight teams as per the ICC Rankings had qualified for the Super 10 automatically.
In the Super 10, the ten teams were divided into two groups and the top two teams from each group advanced to the semifinals. In the end, Sri Lanka beat India in the final to win the T20 World Cup for the first time.
- T20 World Cup 2016 Winner- West Indies
For the 2016 edition of the T20 World Cup, India were picked as the hosts. Just like the previous edition, 16 teams participated in the tournament. The format remained the same and after the Super 10s, India, West Indies, England and New Zealand qualified for the last four. In the end, West Indies and England faced each other in the final and the Caribbean outfit went on to win the competition.
- T20 World Cup 2021 Winner- Australia
The 2021 T20 World Cup was held in UAE with 16 teams participating once again. However, unlike the previous two editions, the Super 10 was replaced by Super 12. As a result, four teams qualified from the first stage. For the semifinals, England, New Zealand, Pakistan and Australia made the cut. In the final, Australia beat New Zealand to win their maiden T20 World Cup.
- T20 World Cup 2022 Winner- England
Australia hosted the T20 World Cup for the first time in 2022. 16 teams participated in the eighth edition of the T20 World Cup and the format remained the same as the 2021 edition. England went on to clinch the T20 World Cup title in 2022 by beating Pakistan in the final.
